Destinations - Bakel
 

This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala with a long stretch of sea shore with sand  and it is ideal for sun bath.  The Bekal fort is situated 16 Km. south of Kasargod on the national high way.  It has great historical and archeological interest and it is the largest and best preserved fort of Kerala.  In ancient days it was under the Kadampa dynasty and later under the Kolathiri Rajas.  Subsequently it became a part of the Vijayanagar empire.

Tippu Sulthan captured this fort in the late 18^th century.  After the overthrow of Tippu Sulthan it was incorporated into the domain of the English East India Company.  It is now managed by the Archeological department of Government of India.  Bekal is also a health resort.  An old mosque is situated very near to the fort and it is believed to have been built by Tippu Sulthan
